Basic Rug Cleaning Tips
Area rugs are a beautiful addition to any home. However, rugs are often placed in high traffic areas and can become very dirty very quickly.
Dirt, soil, grime and oils trapped in area rugs offer the same consequences as dirty carpets in your home and need to be tended to on a regular basis.
Cleaning area rugs in Kenosha requires the same attention and care as wall-to-wall carpeting, and oftentimes, some, such as finer Oriental rugs, even require special attention from a trained technician.
Here are some basic tips for caring for and cleaning area rugs in your home:
Dry Clean Only
Be sure to check to see if the label says, “Dry Clean Only.” If it does, you should roll it up and either bring it to a professional rug cleaner or call to have one pick it up. Be sure to call the cleaner first to ensure they have the tools and training to professionally clean your type of rug, not all do.

Washing Smaller Rugs
When you are washing a small rug with a label that says “Machine Washable” you will first want to take the rug outdoors and shake it to remove any loose dirt particles or miscellaneous debris.
Once you are done outside you can bring the rug back indoors and place it in your washing machine at the recommended temperature. Kenosha Carpet Cleaning Blog recommends using warm water (90 to 105 degrees) accompanied with a mild cleaning detergent. Tumble the rug at the absolute lowest heat setting until it is dry to your satisfaction.
Beating Larger Rugs
If you have a larger rug that you are able to pick up, we recommend you take it outdoors and shake it first to remove loose dirt particles and debris. Once you’ve sufficiently shaken the rug, hang it over a clothesline or similar apparatus and beat it using a broom or large stick. You should start to see dirt falling off the rug. We recommend flipping the rug after a while and continuing the process until you no longer see dirt or dust coming off of it.
Next, bring the rug back inside and vacuum it.
Vacuuming Area Rugs
Area rugs that have fringe require a special vacuuming technique. You will want to use a very gentle suction level and start from the center of the rug, vacuuming toward the fringe. Be careful not to catch the strands in the beater bar of the vacuum cleaner as this could cause serious damage to your rug. Next, lift the edge of the carpet and vacuum beneath the fringe.
Caring for Oriental, Turkish or Persian Rugs
Clean imported rugs exactly to your carpet manufacturer’s specifications or call a professional cleaning service to handle the job. For heirloom rugs, you will definitely want to hire professionals.
